Building Mechanical Engineer

The Mechanical & Piping Group is a Hatch global practice providing mechanical design expertise to a wide variety of Hatch's business practices. Our capability spans through the entire project lifecycle comprising; scoping, conceptual design, pre-feasibility, feasibility studies, detailed engineering, construction support and project management.

The Group:

The group supports all of Hatch’s sectors including energy, mining & mineral processing and infrastructure. Our team in Mississauga is currently seeking a Building Mechanical Engineer to assist project work both in the office, and in the field. The Building Mechanical Engineer is broadly working with senior engineers in establishing system requirements, performing functional analyses, preparing engineering calculations, technical specifications, data sheets and reports.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in client needs and project definitions; contribute to all project phases and ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards for a variety of Municipal facilities such as water and wastewater treatment and pumping, Industrial, Transportation & Commercial projects.
  • Design of plant utilities, such as: HVAC, Plumbing systems (drainage, water distribution, emergency shower, etc.), fire protection systems, compressed air systems, boiler, steam & condensate and heating medium systems, chiller and cooling medium systems, specifically in Water and Wastewater Facilities.
  • Prepare and review project standard specifications and design criteria
  • Prepare and review technical deliverables such as equipment specifications, data sheets, calculations, etc.
  • Prepare and contribute to technical memos and reports, within areas of expertise
  • Provide input to engineering, operating and capital cost estimates
  • Provide input to 3D models and 2D mechanical drawings
  • Coordinate with other disciplines during design and work in a team environment.
  • Participate in and contribute to design reviews
  • Supervise equipment installation, start-up and qualification, as required
  • Visit project sites for information and project related activities
  • Construction support to ensure installation is as per the design, including review shop drawings for compliance
  • Follow company standard quality procedures
Qualifications and Experience:

  • BSc/BEng in mechanical engineering
  • Registration as a professional engineer in Ontario and/or other provinces of Canada; or in pursuit of obtaining license,
  • 2-5 years of mechanical engineering experience
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Good planning and organizational skills
  • Ability to function with minimal supervision
  • Working knowledge of industry standards, regulations and codes pertinent to the mechanical engineering discipline, including Building Codes, NFPA and ASHRAE standards
  • Experience in the use of procedures and workflows in the execution of projects
  • Familiar with HVAC calculation software would be an asset, i.e. Carrier Hourly Analysis (HAP) software

COMPETENCIES
  • Must have excellent communication skills (both written and verbal)
  • Diploma or University degree in mechanical engineering or relevant working experience

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Generate detail and assembly drawings, associated BOMs and any technical documentation related to the products
  • Submit drawings to senior engineers and manufacturing teams
  • Provide all information to support procurement of all mechanical related components, included in BOMs
  • Work on schedule and within the budget on all mechanical aspects of the project, and manage own time for maximum efficiency
  • Be capable of writing technical documents in English at an engineering level
  • Sketch and draw up designs using input from engineers on the team
  • Create designs in line with company procedure, regulations, and client standards
  • Provide support during the building and installation process
  • Finalize designs and send data to the production department
  • Evaluates mechanical and electromechanical systems and products by designing and conducting research programs, applying principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, hydraulics, heat transfer, and materials.
  • Confirms system and product capabilities by designing feasibility and testing methods, testing properties.
  • Develops mechanical and electromechanical products by studying customer requirements; researching and testing manufacturing and assembly methods and materials; soliciting observations from operators.
  • Develops manufacturing processes by designing and modifying equipment for fabricating, building, assembling, and installing components.
  • Assures system and product quality by designing testing methods; testing finished- product and system capabilities; confirming fabrication, assembly, and installation processes.
  • Prepares product reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends
  • Maintains system and product database by writing computer programs and entering data.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Professional Engineer license in Ontario required
  • At least 8 years of related working experience in a design/consulting environment in Electrical engineering
  • At least 5 years of design experience building electrical systems in Ontario
  • At least 3 years of design experience in infrastructure (water/wastewater) electrical systems in Ontario required
  • Solid knowledge and application of the building electrical requirements per building codes, energy codes, and other related standards such as NFPA standards and IEEE & CSA standards
  • Experience in building electrical systems design for commercial, water/wastewater treatment, transportation, office, retail, hospitality, educational, institutional, industrial, and other similar building types preferred
  • Strong communication skills both verbal and written
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
